SMWW Grad Gives Back
SMWW Graduate, Troy Gourley, put his sports management skills to good use in Afghanistan by helping the local military provide humanitarian aide to their own community.
In supervising the Afghanistan military in their efforts to provide children with school and medical supplies as well as athletic equipment, Gourley is using his sports management experience to make Afghanistan a safer place. Gourley and his colleagues handed out soccer balls to local children and watched as a small gift changed the lives of children growing up in a war-torn country.
"As leaders in sports management we have the ability to make a difference in every part of the world whether it's in Afghanistan or the poor streets of Dominican Republic. You never know when handing out one soccer ball could produce a Pele or one baseball could produce a Miguel Tejeda," said Gourley.
Gourley and SMWW grads are proof that sports can make a world wide impact. |
Sports Business Thrives in a Recession
With the U.S. economy nearing a recession, many businesses and industries are struggling to stay afloat.
The sports business industry, however, is not.
A contributing factor to the success of sports business is television contracts. The long-term contracts ensure a steady income even if ticket sales are down.
"Even if they don't go to games, they're still consuming it," said David Carter, executive director of the University of Southern California's Sports Business Institute.
Though the security of television contracts helps to lessen the blow of low ticket sales, some teams have not had to worry about that just yet. Ticket sales for many teams in major markets like the New York Yankees and the New York Mets are at an all time high.
However, according to Bret Polvorosa, SMWW's Sports Business Management instructor and president of Grip, a sports consulting firm, this doesn't hold true for all sports and all markets.
"Many teams outside of the NFL or major markets struggle to fill seats," said Polvorosa, "This creates opportunities for sports business minded people to have a career with professional teams."
There has never been a better time to get your career started in sports. SMWW offers a Sports Business Management program that teaches you the marketing skills needed to succeed in the business of sports.
You can read more about the status of sports business in an article by Wallace Matthews entitled "Recession hasn't hit local teams' ticket prices" at Newsday.com

BC Lions Look to SMWW Agent Advisors for Assistance
Pictured Below: Caesar Rayford and Coach Buono
Last week we announced that SMWW and The Canadian Football League's BC Lions were teaming up for an open tryout in Portland, Oregon.
That tryout futher solidifies the relationship that SMWW and the Lions have shared over the past two years.
SMWW's Director of Football Operations and Agent Services, Marcus Williams, was asked to lend a hand during the tryout by timing sprints and evaluating shuttles. Dr. Lashbrook also attended the tryout and deemed it a success for SMWW and says the future is bright for SMWW's relationship with the CFL.
Six SMWW represented athletes demonstrated their abilities by running sprints, short shuttles and position drills for four coaches of the BC Lions, including GM and head coach, Wally Buono.
Yesterday, the BC Lions announced that they signed University of Washington defensive lineman, Caesar Rayford, as a result of his performance at the open tryout. Rayford, who is represented by SMWW agent advisor Corey Manago, will attend the BC Lions training camp on May 28th.
If you would like to represent athletes as an Agent Advisor, SMWW offers an Athlete Management program to help you get started in the world of sports. |
