A former Los Angeles Dodgers General Manager, Dan Evans has had decision-making roles with five MLB franchises. He is a pioneer in using technology and video analysis within baseball.
Evans’ winning percentage was the 2nd-best mark for any General Manager in Los Angeles Dodgers history when his term concluded, and he assembled MLB’s best bullpen since World War II per Fan Graphs evaluation (2003). Oversaw two of the most productive consecutive drafts in MLB history. He orchestrated the Dodger franchise transformation that had sunk to an overall MLB rating of 28th by rebuilding the organization’s scouting & player development to a #1 ranking two years later by Baseball America. Evans was a Major League scout for the Toronto Blue Jays in his most recent MLB role and oversaw their Pacific Rim operations.
Forbes honored Evans as a Twitter “must-follow” (@DanEvans108). He is serving his second term as a SABR National Board of Director, a testament to his expertise and credibility. For nearly 40 years Hank Jones worked the Pacific Northwest region as a trusted scout for the Los Angeles Dodgers, helping the organization win two World Series (1981, 1988) and succeeding under four different ownership groups, seven general managers and five scouting directors.
Often when there is an organizational regime change, the scouting staff is turned over to new members. But not Hank. His reputation in MLB is beyond reproach, and every new GM and scouting director wanted Jones to stay on their staff.
A slick-fielding middle infielder, Jones was drafted in the 15th round of the MLB Draft to the San Francisco Giants in 1972. He played three seasons in the Giants minor league system before joining the Dodgers organization in 1976 Rule 5 Draft.
For the rest of his career in baseball, he represented Dodger blue.
As a scout, Jones was assigned to the Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, Alaska, Hawaii, and Western Canada areas. He was a fixture during the draft, often the only amateur scout allowed in the room due to his highly sought-after judgment and reputation. Notables players Hank signed include Eric Hull, Todd Hollandsworth (National League Rookie of 1996), Jason Repko, Jeff Brigham, Onan Masoaka, Owen Jones, Joe Jones, Travis Vetters, Given Kutz, Lance Rice, Stephen Ames, Ken Morimoto, Jordan Pratt, Shane Victorino, and Justin Fuller – to name a few.

In January, we got the opportunity to play at the Latin American Baseball Series in Mexico where we finished third and during this series we got a call from the Commissioner of the Caribbean asking if Panama could host a Caribbean Series and get Toros to play in the tournament. Not only did we help them organize the series and were great hosts, but a team that I put together in four days with 15 Toros Players, and 6 Panamanians from other teams and seven players from the Nicaragua and Colombian league won the Series in what is one of the most incredible histories in modern Baseball. We competed against the best teams in the winter leagues and finished with a 4W - 1L record with historic victories against Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic, and Cuba.

The things that I learned from this course are that networking is a lot bigger deal than I realized. I learned how to write scouting reports and get really good feedback on them as to what I need to work on and it's nice knowing that I can make mistakes and learn from them here instead of making them later. I also know that thanks to this course I will be further along than a lot of the people in my position.

I had some doubts at the beginning but as I went through the 8 weeks, talking to actual MLB executives in the industry at a conference and attending the Winter Meetings, I was compelled. Dan not only taught me baseball operations but also guided me to the right people. Through Dan and this program, I connected with a bunch of MLB team executives which eventually lead me to interviews. From the connections that I made throughout, I ended up getting a job at PGA TOUR as a Tournament Operations Specialist.

I thought getting access to people who are directly involved with baseball management was great. Listening to their first hand experience gives you confidence that if you follow their suggestions and examples, it will help you further your career in baseball's management system. I'm very proud to announce that I have formally accepted a Video Scout position with Baseball Info Solutions that I will be starting in March. Not going to lie, it's been a long year filled with a lot of doubt of whether I could even get a job baseball after a lot of rejection but I finally turned a dream that I had in high school into reality. Thank you to everyone who believed that I could make this happen even when I had my doubts. Also, a huge thank you to my mentors at Sports Management Worldwide Dan Evans and Ari Kaplan. I had no idea what to expect when I started this course. I thought that if I were to learn at least one thing about baseball it would be worth it. I ended up learning so much more than expected. The Sports Management Worldwide General Manager/Scouting course has given me the opportunity to examine the latest trends in baseball management and player evaluations, along with an introduction to analytics and how the two disciplines can work together in the difficult task of finding a prospect to compete in Major League Baseball.
